Teen Nutrition

Teen nutrition can seem impossible to manage these days; with numerous ads for junk food everywhere we go, and television models giving kids impossible ideas about appropriate body weight, the messages can be confusing to say the least.

But one thing is certain - teenagers need to eat, and they need to eat a healthy diet. Teens grow during these crucial years at such a rapid pace, that only the first year of their life will compare to this growth spurt. As a result, teen nutrition is especially important right now.

Start with breakfast. Teens who eat a healthy breakfast do better in school and at home, and have more energy throughout the day. Avoid sugary cereals and opt for whole grains and fruit instead.

Teen nutrition is also about vitamins, like extra calcium for growing bones and iron for girls. If your teenager isn't eating a balanced diet (and who is?), offer a multivitamin appropriate for their age and gender. Try to help them to remember what time to take it every day.

Focus on fruits and vegetables in your home, and avoid junk foods like candy, cookies, chips and soda. The empty calories won't nourish your teenager's growth, and will only leave them hungry for more.

Finally, whole grains and plenty of water will round out proper teen nutrition in your home. Eight glasses of water a day is crucial for hydration, more if they play sports or get exercise. And always opt for whole grain breads and cereals, and brown rice instead of white rice. The grains will fill them up the healthy way, and give them energy all day.
